All pay and time calculators

Your payslip shows a rate. It rarely shows what you really earn per hour of your life spent on work. These seven calculators do the arithmetic your employer's figures leave out — free, instant, and nothing stored.

Why the stated rate is not the real one

A job advertised at a given salary quietly assumes a set of hours you are not paid for. The commute is the obvious one. In England the average round trip runs to about an hour a day, and none of it is paid. Add an unpaid lunch break, add the time spent specifically getting ready for work, and a nominal 40-hour week can easily become a 50-hour commitment.

Divide the same pay by those larger hours and the rate drops. That lower number is what your time is genuinely being exchanged for, and it is the number worth comparing when you weigh up one job against another — a better-paying role an hour further away is often the worse deal.

The same logic runs through every calculator here. Work out the real denominator, then everything downstream — a pay rise, an overtime shift, the price of a car — can be measured in something more honest than the headline figure.

Common questions

Is any of this stored or sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or saved, there are no accounts, and there are no tracking cookies. You can use the whole site offline once a page has loaded.

Which countries do these work for?

The maths is country-neutral and you can switch between pounds, dollars, euros and several other currencies on each calculator. Two things are region-specific and flagged where they appear: the typical commute figures, and the pro rata holiday calculation, which uses the statutory minimum for the United Kingdom.

Do these figures account for tax?

No — these work in gross pay throughout, so the rates you get out are comparable with the rates in a job advert. Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments all come off afterwards and depend on circumstances these calculators do not ask about.
